The process bypasses the plastic mold process of 3D printing first to go straight from 3D image scanning to metal printing. While the cost per piece is currently rather steep, the process is sure to become more affordable over time. 

We're sure some of us will recall paying over $300 for a VCR when they first came out. Or maybe that in 1986, a basic Apple IIGS set up (computer, color monitor, 3.5" and 5.25" disk drive and ImageWriterll printer) cost over $2,900 (That's the equivalent of $6,550 in today's dollar)
