Homer's Not Quite a Classic Classic

IN THE 1991 EPISODE

Source-FOX
of The Simpsons “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?,” Homer is asked to design a car for the company run by his long-lost brother, and fails so spectacularly he drives him out of business.

While about a half year short of our 25 years old or older guidelines, technically speaking, Homer's car would now be considered a Classic in more than half of the states in the U.S.

IT WAS UGLY, EXPENSIVE
Irony has a way of showing up in humor. In this case, Homers car was downright ugly and priced at over $82,000 ($128,000 in 2014 dollars) instantly putting Herb's (Homer's long-lost brother) company out of business. The irony is there are echoes of real world mega-flops like the Edsel and the Tucker Torpedo.

AND REMINDS US OF PAST "FUTURE CARS"
Many of us may also remember the assortment of futuristic designs of the '50's including the Futura, Chrysler's Turbo, and the Firebird 2. Here is a short version of GM's promotional video of the Firebird, entitled "Ya Gotta Slow Down" from 1956. It includes an autonomous turbine powered bubble topped vision of future cars and the transportation system.
